Backed into it, or a windstorm creased the bottom section? A damaged panel usually does not mean a new door — individual sections can often be replaced for a fraction of the cost.
Sectional garage doors are built from four to five independent panels, and they are meant to be serviced individually. If the damage is confined to one section, the frame is square and the rest of the door is sound, swapping that section is usually the right call — and it costs a fraction of a full replacement. Anyone who quotes a whole door before looking at whether the section is available has skipped a step.
Shallow dents in a steel skin can sometimes be worked out well enough to be invisible from the street, especially on textured or woodgrain-embossed doors where the pattern hides minor imperfection. What cannot be repaired is a crease: once the steel has folded, it has lost strength there, and that line becomes the place the door eventually fails. Creased sections get replaced. We will tell you honestly which one you have rather than polishing something that needs swapping.
Boise does not get hurricanes, but it does get sustained downslope wind funneling along the Snake River Plain, and spring gusts regularly run hard enough to bow a wide, uninsulated door inward. A standard non-reinforced 16-foot double door is the weakest large surface on most valley houses. When it flexes, the top section usually creases first and the rollers can pop out of the track at the same time.
If you are replacing a section on a wide door anyway, it is worth asking about a strut — a horizontal steel reinforcement across the panel. It is an inexpensive addition during a repair that already has the door apart, and it substantially stiffens a door against exactly this failure.
Two things make section replacement fail: discontinued profiles and faded paint. Door manufacturers change panel designs every few years, so a 2003 door may have no exact match available. And a new section in the correct factory color will still look newer than fifteen years of Idaho sun on the panels around it. Sometimes the answer is to accept a slight mismatch on a side or back door and not on a street-facing one; sometimes it is to paint the whole door after the swap. We will lay out the options with real prices instead of promising an invisible repair we cannot deliver.
